How to Save a Trimmed PowerPoint Video as a Separate File

Save shortened media outside a PowerPoint deck, check the actual file duration, or trim the original video before adding it to a slide.

Save the shortened media outside the deck

For desktop PowerPoint versions with the relevant controls, Microsoft's procedure is to trim the inserted video, compress the media, and use Save Media As. Open the resulting file to confirm the trim survived. Saving the presentation alone does not establish that an independent shortened video has been created.

If you have the original video, you can trim it in VideoMultiCut first and insert the downloaded excerpt into the slide. That gives you a separate media file to check before building the presentation around it.

Use PowerPoint's trim and save procedure

Make a copy of the presentation before changing its media. Select the inserted video, open Playback > Trim Video, and set the beginning and ending points. Microsoft limits this trim feature to videos inserted from your computer; web-inserted videos are a different case.

In the supported Windows desktop workflow, choose File > Info > Compress Media and select the compression level. After it finishes, right-click the trimmed video and choose Save Media As. Save it with a new filename. Consult the instructions for your PowerPoint version if these controls are absent.

Check what the saved file contains

Play the saved media outside PowerPoint. For an example selection from 00:45 to 01:05, the separate video should contain about 20 seconds of the source. A file containing the complete recording has not achieved that selection, even if the slide plays only the desired interval.

Check the first instruction and the final action, then try the file in a new slide or another player. Compression can change media quality. Keep a copy of the original video so you can create a different excerpt without working from an already shortened or compressed file.

Prepare separate slide excerpts in VideoMultiCut

Suppose a training deck needs the incorrect connection on one slide and the corrected connection on another. Choose the original local video in VideoMultiCut. Make an incorrect-connection range from 00:45 to 01:05, using Start 45 and End 65. Make corrected-connection from 02:20 to 02:42, using Start 140 and End 162.

Preview both ranges and export each clip. Open the files outside the browser, then insert the appropriate file into each slide using PowerPoint's local-video insertion command. Each slide now has a source file containing only the excerpt you prepared.

Add slide text and annotations in PowerPoint after inserting the clip. Those slide elements are part of the presentation and will not appear inside a video exported from VideoMultiCut. To include them in a video, you need a presentation or editing workflow that renders them into that video.

Use the source that matches your task

VideoMultiCut does not open a PPTX file or download an embedded online video. Start with a local video you can use. If you only have the deck, use PowerPoint's available media-save controls to obtain the file and verify it before choosing it in the browser.

VideoMultiCut re-encodes each selected range and does not guarantee the output will be smaller or preserve every source feature. Test the file in the presentation environment you will use, including picture and sound. Prepare and insert the first checked excerpt before making the rest of the slide videos.
