# How to Split a Screen Recording into Steps

Create one video file for each task in a screen-recorded tutorial and preserve the clicks and results that explain the step.

## Write the task list before cutting

Use the finished tutorial's navigation as the clip list. For an account setup recording, the files might be create-project, invite-member, change-role, and remove-member. Each name states an action the viewer can complete.

A long introduction rarely needs its own file. Put prerequisites in the first task or in text beside the videos. Keep each clip focused on one action and its result.

## Begin before the click

Start while the relevant screen is already visible and before the pointer moves to the control. The viewer needs time to locate the menu or field. End after the success state, changed setting, or saved result appears.

Include an error only when the lesson explains it. Long waits, typing corrections, and navigation to unrelated tabs can stay outside the selected range.

## Protect information shown on screen

Watch each selected range for email addresses, customer records, access tokens, private tabs, and notifications. Tightening the range may remove details before or after the useful step, but it cannot blur information shown during the step.

Use a full editor when you need redaction, zooming, callouts, cursor emphasis, or replacement narration. VideoMultiCut extracts ranges and keeps the picture as recorded.

## Test the smallest text in the exported file

Open one download at the size your audience will use. Check that labels and code remain readable and that the audio instruction matches the visible action. A clip can be cut correctly and still be difficult to follow on a phone.
